Scotts Valley Football Star Injured in Car Crash

Christina ColeFebruary 03, 2007 4:14 AMScotts Valley High standout football player Russell Jenkins, along with his father, Ed, were both involved in a serious two-vehicle crash on a remote stretch of Highway 8 outside San Diego early Sunday.
The Jenkins' were on their way home from a recruiting trip to Arizona Western College in Yuma, Arizona where Russell had given the school's head coach a verbal commitment.
Their car was hit from behind at a high speed and they rolled over several times. Ed suffered from a broken clavicle, four broken ribs and a bruised lung in the crash. Russell, who was ejected from the vehicle, has seven staples in his head and possibly a broken toe and cuts and scrapes to his arm and back. Both were released on Sunday.
The crash took place at about 7:30am. Russell was asleep in the back while his Father drove, he was thrown from the vehicle despite wearing a seat belt.
Ed said he was going the speed limit of 65 mph in the slow lane when his car was hit. He said they were knocked onto a hill to the right of the highway and rolled approximately three to five times after it was hit by a Mazda Miata. The Miata ended up almost a mile down the highway.
CHP officials from the El Cahon office said the accident report is incomplete. They were only able to confirm the date and location of the accident and that there were no fatalities.
