Supersport Motorcycles Have Highest Death Rate

Motorcyclists who ride high-performance racing motorcycles called supersport bikes are being killed in accidents at a rate nearly four times higher than those who ride all other types of bikes. The bikes are built on racing platforms and then modified for the highway before being sold to consumers.

Research conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found the greatest insurance losses were incurred in claims involving racing motorcycles. Supersport bikes made up less than 10 per cent of registered motorcycles in 2005 but accounted for over 25 per cent of rider deaths.

Here's a breakdown of deaths per 10,000 registered motorcycles in 2005:

Supersport drivers: 22.5 per 10,000
Sport and unclad sport bikes: 10.7 per 10,000
Cruisers and standard motorcycles: 5.7 per 10,000
Touring motorcycles: 6.5 per 10,000
Other/unknown: 4.3 per 10,000
Total: 7.5 per 10,000

Motorcycles are increasing in popularity as well. Between the years 2000 and 2005 registrations climbed by 51 per cent.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Randy Walton

Two Injured in Motorcyle Accident

A motorcycle accident on Saturday, June 23, closed down Angeles Crest highway for three hours injuring two motorcyclists. The accident started a fire that burned a one-tenth acre in the Angeles National Forest.

The two motorcycles sideswiped one another at the highway curve. One of the motorcyclists was, a 41-year-old man of La Miranda and the other was a 32-year-old man, of Torrance. Both suffered broken right legs, broken fingers and many cuts and bruises.

The investigation is ongoing; however authorities do know that one of the bikes leaked fuel when it slammed to the ground, igniting a fire, according to California Highway Patrol.

The blaze was under control in less then an hour thanks so the speedy fire department responding to the call. The two motorcyclists were treated on the scene and transported by helicopter to the hospital.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Man Killed During Motorcycle Ride with Group

A Bakersfield man was killed when his motorcycle slammed into the rear of a parked car on Manor Street Tuesday night.

The collision caused the motorcycle to become stuck in the left rear of the vehicle and the driver was thrown a couple hundred feet, said California Highway Patrol Sergeant Travis Mitchell. The driver, Peter Paul Juarez, III, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, reported Kern County Coroner staff.

Mitchell said the man was driving with a group of friends whom were also on motorcycles. Witnesses report they were driving at speeds faster than 80 mph when the accident happened, he said.

Juarez was riding on one wheel going approximately 60 to 70 mph when he crashed into the vehicle and went forward into a second parked car, reported officers. Sadly, the fatality was the result of poor driving on the victim's part, said Mitchell.

Martin Smith, a nearby resident, said a group of bikers speeds along Manor Street every Tuesday about 8:30 p.m. He estimated that they drive about 100 mph.

"I hear them every Tuesday evening," Smith said. "It's like clockwork."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
