Commercial Truck Accidents Cause Injury in Separate Accidents

One person was killed and three injured yesterday in separate accidents involving commercial trucks. In <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />North County, a 45-year-old La Mesa man died when his car crashed into the back of a contractor’s truck that was parked in the median of I-5 near Camp Pendleton. In the Kearny Mesa area, three people were injured when their car slammed into the back of a slow moving semi-tractor trailer. One of the passengers suffered serious injury.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Commercial trucks are an invaluable part of this nation's economy, but with the benefits comes the drawbacks. The Department of Transportation statistics report that in 2005 there were almost 5000 fatalities arising from commercial truck accidents. Research shows, however, that in more than 80% of those accidents it was not the truck driver's fault.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Walton Barber, LLP

Passenger in Commericial Truck Dies in I-805 Crash

The San Diego Union Tribune has reported that a 37-year-old El Monte was killed when the big rig in which he was a passenger jack-knifed and crashed in the median of south Interstate 805. The driver, a 51-year-old San Bernardino man, suffered major personal injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Witnesses told officers that the big rig was in the No. 2 lane and went past their vehicle going faster than 70 mph. For unknown reasons, the truck veered left and into the center divider, then struck a pillar in the median, tearing the truck apart.

The impact caused pieces of the concrete to fly into the northbound lanes of the freeway and hit a vehicle, but no one in that vehicle was hurt. The CHP closed the No. 1 lane of south Interstate 805 for several hours while the crash was being investigated. The crash and investigation caused delays for drivers in both directions during the morning commute.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to our section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Randy Walton

Rollover Kills Marine; Eight Injured

Eleven Marines are hospitalized and expected to be okay after being involved in a fatal rollover crash of a military truck at Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar.

One marine was killed and eight were treated and then released from the hospital when the seven-ton truck, part of a six vehicle convoy, practicing scheduled training, rolled over an embankment on the base Saturday.

The Major said the truck was moving along a dirt range road and the accident happened just before a sharp turn in the road on a steep embankment.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole

Dump Truck Trapped in Crossing

Officials with the state Dept. of Transportation and the California Highway Patrol are pleading with drivers to abide by vehicle length restrictions on Highway 140 after a dump truck gets stuck on a bridge.

A driver for Burson-based C&D Trucking was hauling loads of pea gravel to Yosemite National Park at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. On the second detour bridge, one of the wheels caught the guardrail, which lead to a break in the bracket and putting more weight on the axle, said Sergeant Bryan Duncan.

The road was closed for approximately 20 minutes before other dump trucks were able to remove the load and free the truck.

Nearby signs note that vehicles crossing the bridge must be less than 28 feet long, Duncan said. The truck and trailer stretched about twice as long as the bridge limit, he said. Without the trailer, the truck was just under the limit. An accident report was being filed, which likely will include fines against the driver, he said.

Chuck Weimer, owner of C&D Trucking, said it was his company's first trip up Highway 140 to Yosemite since the rock slide. The driver didn't notice the signs along the road, he said. "There was no damage to the bridge whatsoever," he said, adding that he was unaware of any potential fines.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
